A wealthy widow from Tilsit, Marta Anker, falls in love with a fisherman named Ansas Balčiai and is determined to do anything special with his wife, Indre. Seduced by Marta's promise of a luxurious life, Ansas betrays his child, but during a trip to Tilsit, his feelings for Indre are rekindled. Realizing his guilt, Ansas can no longer live with remorse and chooses a tragic outcome. The film intertwines love drama, melodrama, and the theme of Lithuanian identity, and Marta's contradictory and tragic image becomes one of the most striking accents of the work.
