About the film

  • Best Cinematography Award at the 10th Baltic, Belarus and Moldavia Film Festival in Minsk in 1969
  • Special Jury Prize at San Remo International Film Festival in 1975
  • Picked the best Lithuanian film of all times by film critics in 1995

The film focuses on the resolve of human beings and the whole Lithuanian nation to find the time and room for simple emotions in the face of cataclysmic events. The film depicts this chaotic period through the relationship of two brothers, one dedicated to his family and conscience, and the other dedicated to his political ideal. These divided brothers can be read as a representation of a country torn in two, of a history rudely divided. Lithuania has a history of occupation and the struggle to survive takes place both at a personal and a cultural level.

The film is based on the novel by Egons Līvs.
