Film Education
The Lithuanian Film Centre supports and promotes initiatives aimed at the development of film education. It coordinates and advances visual literacy programmes, seeking to make cinema widely accessible both as a leisure activity and as a means of self-expression and understanding the world.
Film education is an integral part of visual literacy education, which develops the ability to “read”, critically evaluate, and create visual content. Film education for children and young people is particularly important, as visual literacy fosters creativity, critical thinking, and an understanding of visual culture, while also helping to cultivate an informed and engaged film audience.
The Film Education Database (KEUB) is an ongoing film education project of the Lithuanian Film Centre dedicated to visual literacy and the promotion of national cinema. Each film in the database is accompanied by professionally prepared educational materials that enable teachers to turn a film screening into a film education lesson. These resources encourage students to engage with, analyse, interpret, discuss, and critically evaluate the films they watch. The platform is in Lithuanian only.
European Young Audience Award, established in 2012, celebrates outstanding European films selected for young viewers aged 12 and over.
Three nominated films are presented to youth audiences through the cultural partner network across Europe as part of the European Awards Season. From November to January, young people act as jurors and rate the films, and their votes determine the winner, who is announced at the European Film Awards ceremony.
Dedicated screenings are held annually in Lithuania, giving young audiences the opportunity to participate in the selection process and engage with contemporary European cinema.
