The Lithuanian-Chilean-Danish co-production ‘I’m Not From Here‘ (‘Yo no soy de aquí‘) by Maite Alberdi & Giedre Zickyte was awarded at ‘Vision du Réel‘ festival. The film was premiered at the festival in the competition of short documentary movies section.“Working on this film was an extraordinary experience and not because of filming in Chile and collaborating with people from the other side of the earth. At first being in the completely new place, I felt like the hero of the film Josebe. The collaboration with Maite was full of inspiration, mutual understanding and respect in both creative and human sense. I dare say I have learned a lot from Maite and I hope she feels the same about me. I was convinced once again that cinema is universal and is not limited with geography nor language, ” – says Giedre Zickyte

In a retirement home whose daily life is punctuated with trivia, the petulant Josebe, age 88, dwells on childhood memories. She looks back with nostalgia on many moments, from slow dances in her beloved town of Errenteria (near San Sebastian) to meeting her nationalist husband. Then sometimes she suddenly expresses herself in Basque and notes, with a certain perplexity, that her interlocutors do not seem to understand her. And when she evokes her parents or an imminent return to their home, the nurses and her daughter gently and firmly reason with her. Lost in the mists of time, she now lives in Chile and is striving to resist, with touching pride, the fragility of the body and a memory that is fading. A confinement that is as internal as it is painful is sketched out through narrow and precise framing.

“Maite and Giedre are such a wonderful team, and we could not be more thrilled to see that their joint efforts to create this little gem of a film have now been rewarded in Nyon. Being there at the world premiere was simply an incredible experience: To feel that the audience really connected with the film in the same way we do. Congratulations to the talented team, ” – says Mille Haynes, Head of CPH:LAB.

The film is the result of Lithuanian film centre collaboration with Copenhagen International Documentary Film Festival‘s program CPH:LAB. Each year twenty filmmakers from ten European and ten non-European countries are carefully invited to take part. The program is focused on training / project development, pitching events at international co-production markets and subsequent production. Lithuanian film centre became the partner of the programme and joined a number of Film Institutes and Centres co-operating with CPH:LAB in 2012.

The program is supported by MEDIA Mundus and a private Danish foundation – The Obel Family Foundation. The production budgets are funded by CPH:DOX in partnership with national film institutes.
